In August 2019, the IWMF announced the hiring of Rick Smith as CEO for the organization, heralding a new direction for the organization, whereby the board would move from an operating board to a governing board. Two key aspects of that change were the hiring of a CEO (Rick) and of a new Chief Development Officer(CDO).

Newton Guerin joined the IWMF home office staff as Chief Development Officer on October 14th. He brings over 39 years of leadership experience with senior management positions in four of the nation’s leading voluntary health agencies.

He began his career in the not-for-profit sector with the American Cancer Society as Field Representative in Birmingham, Alabama. During his ten-year career with the American Cancer Society, Mr. Guerin served as National Representative in the Society’s home office providing consultation and training in all aspects of strategic and operational planning, financial management and staff development to five statewide Divisions.

Mr. Guerin held several positions during his 24-year career with the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. As Chief of Staff, he led the home office annual planning and budgeting process – 124 employees with an annual budget of $80 million. He served as Regional Director with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, providing management oversight to staff and leadership volunteers in eight major markets throughout the country. These chapters accounted for over $37 million in annual revenue. As CEO of the American Liver Foundation, he led the ALF’s traditional donor-based fund-raising campaigns and created strategic alliances with several corporate partners, generating over $2M to support the ALF mission. He oversaw a celebrity-focused multi-media public awareness campaign to bring attention to treatment options for people with hepatitis, and secured a first-ever national title sponsorship gift of $100,000 to support Flavors, one of ALF’s signature fund-raising events.

Most recently, he served as the International Dyslexia Association’s Chief Development and Operating Officer where he planned and implemented IDA’s signature event, TeamQuest, to unite IDA under one vibrant identity and generate new revenue, volunteers and stakeholders. This event raised over $170K in year-one.

Mr. Guerin lives in Fredericksburg, Virginia with his wife, Jane.
